The Gossip

You have probably heard this from a teacher or parent at some point in your life: no one likes a gossip. Anyone at any stage in life can fall prey to gossip. Gossip is never warranted or deserved. At one time, gossip was only spread by word of mouth, but with unlimited access to the Internet and the speed at which gossip can be spread, there are more dangerous consequences. Young people have committed suicide because of the hurtful rumors and downright lies people can IM or text to friends or post online. One unwarranted rumor started by a student who has a gripe about another can spread like wildfire, and can be impossible to retract or refute.

If you find out your roommate is talking about you behind your back, you can confront her or choose to ignore it. Ignoring it may sound like the more reasonable reaction, but, in reality, it is difficult to do. Your instincts are to fight back and defend yourself. But by confronting your roommate and making it clear you know it was her and that you do not tolerate gossip puts her on the spot. If you do it immediately after finding out, you have a better chance of catching her off guard, as she has not yet starting justifying her actions to herself and others.
